Supermassive Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei. Ii. Calibration of the Black Hole Mass–velocity Dispersion Relationship for Active Galactic Nuclei
نویسندگان
چکیده
We calibrate reverberation-based black hole (BH) masses in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by using the correlation between BH mass,MBH, and bulge/spheroid stellar velocity dispersion, . We use new measurements of for six AGNs and published velocity dispersions for 10 others, in conjunction with improved reverberationmapping results, to determine the scaling factor required to bring reverberation-based BH masses into agreement with the quiescent galaxyMBHrelationship. The scatter in the AGN BH masses is found to be less than a factor of 3. The current observational uncertainties preclude the use of the scaling factor to discriminate between broadline region models. We use new measurements of σ∗ for 6 AGNs and published velocity dispersions for 10 others, in conjunction with improved reverberation mapping results, to determine the scaling factor required to bring rever...
متن کاملSupermassive Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei. I. the Consistency of Black Hole Masses in Quiescent and Active Galaxies
We report the first results of a program to measure accurate stellar velocity dispersions in the bulges of the host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for which accurate black hole (BH) masses have been determined via reverberation mapping. We find good agreement between BH masses obtained from reverberation mapping, and from the M• −σ relation as defined by quiescent galaxies, indicatin...
متن کاملJoint Formation of Supermassive Black Holes and Galaxies
The tight correlation between black hole mass and velocity dispersion of galactic bulges is strong evidence that the formation of galaxies and supermassive black holes are closely linked. I review the modeling of the joint formation of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes in the context of the hierarchical structure formation paradigm. 1.1 Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Bul...
متن کاملSUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES IN GALACTIC NUCLEI Observational Evidence and Some Astrophysical Consequences
Abstract. I review the status of observational determinations of central masses in nearby galactic nuclei. Results from a variety of techniques are summarized, including ground-based and space-based optical spectroscopy, radio VLBI measurements of luminous water vapor masers, and variability monitoring studies of active galactic nuclei. I will also discuss recent X-ray observations that indicat...
متن کاملBlack Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei
The most viable scenario for modelling of active galactic nuclei includes a supermassive black hole (with the mass of 106−109 Solar masses) accreting the galaxian matter from its vicinity. The release of the gravitational energy of the infalling matter is ultimately responsible for the large radiative output of those objects, and in some cases, for formation and acceleration of powerful relativ...
